Sunland Baobab Tree

Biggest Baobab on the planet!

The Sunland Baobab (alias Platland Baobab, Mooketsi Baobab, Big Baobab, Pub Tree and Tree Bar) is located on Sunland Farm, near Modjadjiskloof in the province of Limpopo.

Sunland's Baobab is 22m high and some 47m in circumference and is the record holder for its species according to the SA Dendrological Society. Carbon dating estimates the tree is possibly older than the Giza Pyramids and evidence of both Bushmen and Voortrekkers has been found, attesting to the historical importance of this tree. The Sunland Baobab has even made it to the front page of the Wall Street Journal!

This world famous Baobab has a trunk that consists of two connected parts with enormous hollows that in turn are connected with a narrow passage. These hollows have been turned into a pub which has seated 60 persons at one time and a wine cellar with a constant temperature of 22 degrees C, ventilated by natural vents.

The Baobab blooms gloriously in spring and is home to many bird species, including two pairs of owls.
