Gravelotte is a small mining village at the junction of the R71 and R40 in the northernmost province of Limpopo which got its name from a 1870 battle, known as The Battle of Gravelotte, between the French and Germans. The town lies almost half way between Ba-Phalaborwa (Phalaborwa) and Tzaneen and west of the Kruger National Park.
Gravelotte is a great destination all year round as the distinction between summer and winter is hardly discernable. With the northern Drakenberg visible in the distance and the bushveld plains spread all around it has a rugged beauty.
Mining activities carried on there include antinomy, gold, emeralds, mica and silica.
The town’s main claim to fame which should entice more than a few visitors is the Leydsdorp Giant Baobab tree, just 4 kilometres from town, which used to house a liquor bar.
One of the country’s major draw cards, the Kruger National Park, two-thirds of which lies in the Limpopo, lies just west of this little town..
