Franschhoek Literary Festival

Promote Reading & Encourage Writing

The Franschhoek Literary Festival has fast become one of the leading literary events in the country. Its mission is to share the talents and stories of both local and international writers through informal, lively, and stimulating discussions in venues throughout the village and to encourage a vibrant culture of reading and writing in school children of all ages .

The festival, which was started in 2007 by a committee of only six volunteers, was made so that they could raise funds to build a new community library. The volunteers decided to create a festival of mostly English-speaking local writers, with a few writers coming from overseas. They had no idea how many people would attend, with their estimate being between five and five hundred - well over a thousand tickets were sold!

The event is a gathering of over 90 Authors, Editors, Poets, Illustrators, media, Critics and general literary lovers. The 12th Annual Festival will see no less than 100 events taking place in various venues in the village of Franschhoek, all within a few minutes’ walk from each other, creating a vibrant ambience in the street crowded with book-lovers.

In the week leading up to the festival, for the seventh year now, the younger literary enthusiasts can take part in “Book Week for Young Readers” where they can participate in story telling sessions with some of the children’s Authors attending the event. This inclusion will assist with the sponsors and festival organisers continual emphasis on promoting reading and encouraging writing!
