Fernkloof Nature Reserve, Western Cape
The Fernkloof Nature Reserve in the Western Cape of South Africa is situated close to Hermanus, approximately a 90 minute drive from Cape Town.
The reserve is close to 1 800 hectares in size and boasts 1 600 different species of vegetation of which the unique coastal fynbos is one. There is no other place on earth where this many different species can be seen growing in such close proximity. This combined with a patch of evergreen forest has allowed for over 60 km of walking trails for visitors to hike along.
The reserve is also rich in bird life with about 92 different species of which the popular sightings are of the Sunbirds, Cape Sugar Bird and Rock Thrush. Some of the mammals present in the park are the Cape Greysbok , Klipspringer, Mongoose, Baboon and Dassie.
It is best to visit in the flowering season of September.

Admission
The Park is open every day between 07h00 and 19h00 and entrance is free of charge.
A nominal fee is charged for guided tours, which must be booked beforehand.
Climate
Hermanus experiences a Mediterranean style climate with rainfall in the winter months from June to August.
Summer months, November to March will have average temperatures of between 14˚C and 26˚C.
Winter months, May to August will have average temperatures of between 6˚C and 19˚C.
Transport
There are Domestic and International flights into Cape Town International Airport on a daily basis. Car rental companies are available for easy access around the area.
Festivals
September – Spring Flower Festival: Hosted in the Fernkloof Hall and exhibits flowers and arts/crafts. A nominal entrance fee is charged please contact the Reserve for confirmation of pricing.
