A Personal Journey

The Cape Camino came from the idea of the Camino de Santiago in Spain, so not the first of its kind, but the first of its kind in South Africa. Walking the Camino is a personal journey left entirely up to you, it is a retreat – a time away from the normal!

The exquisitely beautiful Cape Peninsula is the setting for this unique adventure. Many of our “Pilgrims” set off on their Camino with no particular reason, but as the journey unfolds they become open to whatever the journey may bring them from healing heartache, challenging you physically or just an adventure.

Cape Camino currently offers a circular route which is a nearly all-passable route around the peninsula, apart from the Chapman’s Peak stretch where you have to take transport over to Hout Bay. The route is also a sacred route, a pilgrimage route hosted by our diverse sacred sites found in South Africa, setting it apart from a hiking trail or tour. Our countries diversity is showcased and celebrated with bias from Hare Krishna or Sufism to Afrikaans or African traditionalism.

The natural setting is forever changing, yet always a thrill for any nature lover! The Route takes you through winelands, forests, fynbos and rocky hillsides and offers views of the city below, mountains above and canopied footpaths and of course our coastline!

The Route is divided up into 7 legs, with a few extensions in-between, and the full route is approximately 200 km long. This is your journey so you can walk only one leg or all, decide if you want to walk only a few kilometres a day and take in nearby sites or walk at a quicker pace and you can start your journey anywhere along the route. The most popular starting point is the Schoenstatt Retreat in Constantia, but you decide!
