Grasnek Pass is one of eight mountain passes that meander through the Baviaanskloof region. Of the eight, Grasnek Pass is probably the best in terms of scenic beauty.

Distance 8.3 km
Gradient average 1:31
Gradient maximum 1:6
Elevation Summit 451m
Surface Gravel Road

There is only one main road through here and four passes, Grasnek, Langkop, Holgat and Combrincks follow in quick succession. No matter which way you travel this road, you will be in for a visual feast. Entering the road from the west side the Pass officially starts at a small and very old green sign - the sign simply reads: 'OLD MOUNTAIN PASS'.

The road starts climbing immediately and in places things can get a bit rough. The Pass crosses rivers no fewer than 42 times and this causes a challenge during rainy season. Parts of the pass are also narrow enough to make passing other vehicles difficult and it is recommended that you travel in a 4x4 vehicle, but some drive the Baviaanskloof in a 4x2, just not when the roads are wet.

As you reach the summit the road becomes a little easier to navigate and just in time too as the views of the valley are breath-taking. There aren’t many view stops so we can only suggest taking it slow to ensure you enjoy the view. It is only as the Pass begins to descend again that a few view stops appear before a series of twists and turns take you through the final 4 km’s to the Baviaans River crossing and the end of the Pass.

A must-have for the pass is the Slingby’s Baviaanskloof Map as it will point out all the picnic sites, swimming holes, camp sites and forested areas as well distances between road junctions.
