The Cape Columbine Nature Reserve lies just south west of the popular weekend town of Paternoster, its entrance only 5 km away. The Reserve, which includes Tietiesbaai, stretches over 263 hectares along the Cape West Coastline. The vegetation is typical West Coast Veld, ranging from fynbos to Karoo succulents and between August and September the scenery becomes a bright tapestry of wild flowers.
In 1973 the area was declared a nature reserve and visitors will note that this rocky coastline remains untainted by development as the only building in the Cape Columbine Reserve is the last manually controlled lighthouse to be built in South Africa, a beacon amidst the rocks!
The Cape Columbine Lighthouse is an attraction all on its own, however guests to the Reserve are drawn here for the open space, the beauty of the unique landscape and the sightings of dolphins and whales. What makes the area even more unique are the huge rocks that sit just inside the bay, where one of the two campsites to choose from, lies very close to water and giant boulders which makes it the ideal spot for the fishermen and divers.
The second campsite, closer to the gate is the Beach Camp, offering huts and tents with more comfortable beds. The campsite, as its name implies, is situated right on the beach which gives a different vibe to your camping weekend. Camping doesn’t get better than this!
