- Ohrigstad Dam Nature Reserve
Ohrigstad Dam Nature Reserve, Mpumalanga
The Ohrigstad Dam and Nature Reserve lies between Ohrigstad and Pilgrim’s Rest on the R533, roughly 10 kilometres from the turnoff to the Ohrigstad Dam. It is home to a range of mammals including some rarer ones such as the Mountain Reedbuck and the Brown Hyena.
On the Ohrigstad Dam canoeing and rowing are popular pastimes and there are outstanding fishing opportunities with countless carp, catfish, yellowtail and tilapia just waiting to bite.
There is prolific bird life and a number of large mammals. Not uncommon are sightings of brown hyena, bushbuck, grey rhebok, hedgehog and mountain reedbuck.
Pretty, shaded picnic sites attract day visitors offering them an appealing break from the hustle and bustle that can grip this part of the lowveld, particularly during peak season.
