Harding, founded in 1873 and named after Sir Walter Harding a supreme court judge, is an administrative, agricultural, dairy and timber producing centre.

A narrow-gauge railway led for 87 kilometres from Port Shepstone through a rolling sea of hills to the small town. The since abandoned railway was a gem of it's kind in those days when the miniature steam locomotives were willing, bustling and well maintained by proud drivers.
