Gen Sir Redvers Buller's first attempt to cross theThukela River and relieve Ladysmith met with disaster at the Battle of Colenso.

Memorials and graves of those who died were moved to this site which was Gen Buller's headquarters during the battle.

Several brigade hospitals were also situated here.

This was also the site of the first moving pictures taken of a battle.
