Gateway to the Central Drakensberg
Winterton lies in the foothills of the exquisite Drakensberg Mountain Range and literally serves as the Gateway to the Central Drakensberg, just 14 km away. It is located in, what can only be described as stunning surroundings!
Winterton is a pretty little town, one visited by tourists staying at nearby lodges, at least three times a week via the Baz Bus, a hop-on hop-off facility for travellers. The town is close to the Champagne, Cathedral and Cathkin Peaks of the Drakensberg and all offer some incredible hiking trails as well as trout and bass fishing. Other outdoor activities around this beautiful part of the “Berg” includes horse riding, hang gliding and plenty of San Rock Art to explore.
Winterton hosts an annual street carnival in July which sees the main street lined with artists, musicians, crafters, foodies and plenty of ideas for tourist activities in the area. The town itself also has a few monuments and a museum to visit.
Winterton accommodation includes B&B’s and Guesthouses in town and the surrounding area has a variety of accommodation ranging from budget-friendly to luxury hotels and self-catering cottages.

Climate
Winterton receives approximately 789 mm of rain annually with most rainfall occurring during the summer months.
Summer months, November to March will have average temperatures of between 11˚C and 29˚C.
Winter months, May to August will have average temperatures of between 1˚C and 23˚C.
Transport
There are daily flights into Pietermaritzburg Airport, approximately 145 km away and into Durban’s King Shaka International Airport, approximately 240 km away, both via the N3. Car hire facilities are available at both Airports.
History
Three years after the Anglo-Boer War, the then Colonial Government built a weir across the Little Tugela River and founded an irrigation settlement known as Springfield until 1910. Later it was named Winterton in honour of the Secretary for Agriculture, HD Winter.
