Westonaria, Gauteng
Westonaria was formed in 1948 by the amalgamation of the townships Venterspost, proclaimed in 1937, and Westonaria, proclaimed in 1938. First named Venterspost; the name was changed to Westonaria when municipal status was attained in 1952.
This amalgamation was officially announced in the Government Gazette of 9 December 1994.
Westonaria is situated amidst gold fields and forms the nucleus of five gold mines. The town is approximately 45 km from Johannesburg and is accessible by road and rail making it convenient for commuters to Johannesburg.
A landing strip and clubhouse for sky-divers has been built at the Westonaria Dam resort.
The sport is particularly spectacular here for participant and spectator, especially during summer when the wide, open valley is intensely green, the atmosphere clear and the blue sky crowded with cottonwool clusters of cumulus.
