History
Umhlanga derives its name from the Zulu language and means "place of reeds", referring to the beds of reeds growing along the Ohlanga River north of Umhlanga Rocks.
Alfred Campbell built a beach cottage, The Oyster Lodge, in 1863 before the town had even been founded. It was his father, Sir Marshall Campbell who officially founded he town in 1895 and the site of his son’s Lodge is now the site of the Luxury Oyster Box Hotel. The roof of the Oyster Lodge was painted white and served as a navigational beacon, just as the Umhlanga Lighthouse, erected in 1955, does today.
It didn’t take long before there were more cottages being built and a well was soon sunk to supply water, the well still exists today in the park opposite the Malindi Apartment Building on Marine Drive. The first Hotel was The Victoria Hotel, built in 1923, which hosted many famous guests including George Bernard Shaw in 1935. The Victoria Hotel became the Umhlanga Rocks Hotel after additions and improvements over the years.
Umhlanga continues to grow in popularity as more and more businesses and people move away from the busy city to more luxurious homes and offices – Umhlanga is becoming known as the “Sandton by the Sea”.
