The Prospectors Hiking Trail is situated just outside Pilgrim’s Rest in Mpumalanga, South Africa.

The trail offers five different routes which you can follow and all will let you relive the history of the gold rush time and introduce you to some of the most scenic natural attractions in this area. The options include trails over two days to five days that explore the area around Pilgrim’s Rest along paths that were formally used by gold prospectors who sourced rivers, creeks and waterfalls in hope of finding their fortune.

The Peach Creek Trail is a one-night route option and is part of the Peach Tree Creek Trail which is a two-night, circular route between Morgenzon Plantation and Pilgrim’s Rest. This route explores former diggings, the coco pan tracks, crosses the Blyde River and follows a historical railway line heading up to an indigenous forest. It is the shortest of the routes, 20.9 km’s, and allows time to explore the village of Pilgrim’s Rest as well.

The longest route is the Prospectors Trail, 62.5 km’s over five nights. This route offers hikers a real insight into the area and explores various types of habitat such as grasslands, indigenous forests and rock formations. It follows old wagon routes and the original Robbers Pass and hikers spend each night at a different hut from all the routes combined. This trail is rated as very difficult and is only for hikers who regard themselves as very fit.

The Black Hill Trail is three days, 41.3 km’s, and follows the same route as the first three days of the Prospectors Trail and heads back to Morgenzon Hut via a viewpoint on Themeba Hill. The four-day Morgenzon Trail, 53.9 kms, is similar to the Peach Tree Creek Trail, but includes the Black Hill Hut as well.

Various mammals can be spotted along these trails and birdwatchers are in for a treat. The trails have been designed for experienced hikers and are considered fairly difficult; however, the two day hike might be an option for beginners who are fit.
