The Steenkampsberg Pass joins the small community of Roossenekal with Lydenburg and is one of the highest Passes in the region. The Pass is often mistakenly called De Berg Pass after the highest peak in the mountain range.

The Pass is tarred and is only 30 km’s to either of the two towns and has some incredible scenery that includes the Steenkampsberg Plateau, a wetland region that is home to three endangered species of crane – Blue, Crowned and Wattled.

Starting at the Kraaibosch Farm the pass travels up the Steenkampsberg Pass in a south westerly direction. The road follows a few easy curves for about 9 km before reaching the summit, just before the summit the road enters a big right turn revealing a small gravel road which is the access road to the highest Peak “De Berg” – the diversion is approximately 6 km if you have the time.

The summit overlooks the Velorenvalei Nature Reserve and another road here, to the left this time, will take you to this popular tourist spot. The road is called De Berg Road and it is a scenic trip to take. This is however a high accident zone and you wold be wise to slow down and look out for traffic turning onto and from the side road.

The descent is a series of gentle curves, bikers often refer to the “high speed twisties”, but they should present no problems if travelled at the speed limit. The Pass ends at the Kliprivier Farm.

This Pass falls into the category of 'High Altitude' on our national database and in winter one can expect snow on the pass occasionally with bitterly cold temperatures.
