Op de Tradouw Pass

The Op de Tradouw Pass lies on the popular R62 route between Barrydale and Montagu. The Pass is not to be confused with the Tradouw Pass, lying 10 km’s east and to the south of Barrydale. Running back to back with the Op de Tradouw Pass however, is the Wildehondskloofhoogte Pass and together the two form one long 15 km double pass.

Both towns at either end of the route are popular weekend destinations and offer plenty to do. The Pass offers a modern, well engineered and safe route. Travelling in an easterly direction the Pass offers a continuous decent with no less than ten corners, bends and curves – a couple which are fairly sharp so sticking to the speed limit is always advisable.

Op de Tradouw Pass provides stunning views of the Tradouw Valley, peppered with fruit farms and dams and the Langeberg mountains in the backround. The Pass comes to an end about 15 km’s before Barrydale, but Route 62 continues to be an interesting drive, look out for the Road Kill Café if you need to make a pit stop.

If you haven’t yet explored R62, a few days off to soak up the wonderful attractions along this full route comes highly recommended. Other mountain passes along the route include Cogmanskloof, Huisrevier Pass as well as a detour route through the Seweweekspoort is a must!
