Mandela House (Mandela Museum)

The Mandela Museum is also known as Mandela House as it was the residence of Nelson Mandela and his first wife Evelyn Ntoko Mase, from 1945 to 1957.

Mr Mandela divorced in 1957 and then lived there for a short while with his second wife, Winnie Mazikidela-Mandela, from 1958 until 1961, when he had to flee. In 1962 he was arrested. He returned there for only 11 days after he was released from prison in 1990 and then left to live in Houghton.

Winnie Mazikidela-Mandela lived in the house with her children while her husband was in prison.

National Monument

The house was declared a national monument on 16 March 1999 after Mr Mandela offered it to the Heritage trust, who maintain the site.

This is one of the most popular heritage sites with many people making use of a tour guide. It is not necessary to make a booking.
