A plaque and the graves of 4 British soldiers mark the site where young Winston Churchill, 25 years of age, was captured by the Boer forces on 15 November 1899 after they derailed the armoured observation train in which he was travelling.

Churchill was a war correspondent and worked for the London Morning Post. He was one of the 164 people on the train that fateful day as it came under fire from the Boers while approaching a bend in the line near the Bloukrans River.

Three trucks were derailed as the train crashed into rocks placed on the line but miraculously the locomotive managed to break through and carry on to Frere.

The British suffered 7 fatalities, 45 wounded and 74 taken prisoners.
