The Seekoei Nature reserve lies between the coastal villages of Aston Bay and Paradise Beach, approximately 5km from Jeffreys Bay, along the N2. The nature reserve comprises of an estuary of about 66ha at the confluence of the Seekoei and Swart rivers. For this reason the bulk of the reserve is only accessible by way of a small pontoon.
Birdlife and animals
Large flocks of birds frequent the estuary and the birdlife is awesome, with around 120 species including flamingos, fish eagles and red-knobbed coots when conditions are right.Penguins can be viewed at the Penguin Rehab Centre, where they re-cooperate after treatment from pollution & exhaustion.
One should also be on the lookout for blue duiker, bushbuck, bush pig, caracal, common duiker, Grysbok, porcupine, large spotted genet, porcupine, yellow and grey mongoose and the angulate tortoise, or Rooipens, a species of tortoise found in dry areas and scrub forest in South Africa. This tortoise in the only known member of the genus Chersina.
Hiking trails
There is a 3km hiking trail that can be reached by crossing the river on a pontoon. A short 1km hike runs through the northern section of the reserve & passes a bird hide where birds can be viewed from the bank of the estuary. Both of these trails allow visitors to enjoy the lush foliage and the animal life that inhabits it.
Climate
As the Seekoei river lies between winter and summer rainfall areas the average temperature is 17ºC an average rainfall of 490mm. The weather can be unpredictable with some warm days in winter and some cold days in summer and there is no clear wet or dry season, with most of the rain falling in spring and autumn.
Vegetation
Most of the reserve contains Kaffrarian succulent thicket; a dense semi-succulent, thorny, vegetation. The most common trees are aloes, bitou, boerboom, gwarrie, milkwood and sage wood, with patches of coastal fynbos; of the Erica, Metalasia and Passerina species.
Restrictions
No fishing, canoes or boats are allowed on the estuary or in the nature reserve. No dogs are allowed and no animals may be disturbed or plants removed. No fires to be lit.
