Affie Plaas

It is very difficult to miss this roadside farm stall with its attractive bales of hay dressed up as Johannes and Magrieta and their two children. "Affie plaas" is a colloquial Afrikaans term that is used to refer to goods that come directly from the farm. This South African farm stall is a proudly Afrikaans establishment situated on the R60 western edge of the town of Robertson.

Robertson and its valley are known for their contribution to the wine and rose industries, and are in the heart of the Route 62 Winelands. Robertson was established in 1853 and is brimming with history and culture. As such, it is one of the Western Cape’s gems, and the perfect locale for a traditional farm stall like this one.

Affie Plaas farm stall was established almost 30 years ago, when it began as one man selling apricots on the side of the road. Since then, it has blossomed into the well-loved institution that it is today.

Local goods that can be found on its shelves include waterblommetjies, fresh farm breads, pies, traditional desserts, homemade rusks, pickles, jams, quail eggs and chocolate salami. There is a massive selection of dried fruit and nuts and a myriad of tea blends on offer with Melktert that looks and tastes like the one that Ouma used to bake! For those who are looking for something different while not negotiating on their responsible tourism standards, the organic jams and locally-produced organic wines are a must to try. Their freshly pressed fruit juice mixes are incredible and their barista goes out of his way to be friendly. There is also an amazing variety of craft beers and locally produced liquor.

While shoppers are perusing the many tasty delights and interesting arts and crafts of Affie Plaas, traditional Afrikaans background music (“boeremusiek”) completes the experience. Local farmers and crafters supply much of the produce being sold at the stall, which means that it is fresh, original, and uplifts the local community.

Visitors can stock up with some padkos or take a break and enjoy a delicious cuppa coffee with waterblommetjie and feta pies as well as some delectable desserts which include syrupy koeksisters and freshly baked cakes!

There is ample parking with a table or two to sit outside.
