Historic centre of the City of Pretoria

Church Square is situated in Pretoria in the province of Gauteng, South Africa.

The square is the site of the city’s first Church built in 1855 and in its’ early years was first used as a market place and sports field.

The Square's most prominent features are the statues of the 5th President of South Africa, Paul Kruger and the four statues surrounding him of unknown soldiers. The four buildings surrounding the Square are the Old Council Chambers, now offices for the City of Tshwane, Old Capitol Theatre which has now mostly been converted into a parking lot, Old Tudor Chambers which is now servicing the city as luxury offices, and lastly the Palace of Justice Building. The Old Palace of Justice now serves as the North and South Gauteng High Court, but is most famous for the “Rivonia Trial” where Nelson Mandela was charged with treason and subsequently incarcerated.

Today Church Square is a relaxing spot for visitors who appreciate 19th Century and early 20th Century architecture or for families who have just come to feed the pigeons.
