Gately House

Gately House in the Eastern Cape of South Africa is situated in the city of East London.

John Gately was an Irish Immigrant who became a prominent businessman, one of the founders of the municipal council and was popular enough to be elected Mayor of East London more than once. The house was built in 1876 and his family lived there until the death of his last remaining child Margaret, in 1966. The East London Museum then acquired the home and in 1973 it became a national monument.

Gately House is situated alongside the Queens Park in a beautiful garden. It has a veranda that stretches around three sides of the single storey house and is an excellent example of a modest Victorian home and is one of the only house museums to still have the majority of the original furniture pieces on display.
