Ogies, meaning 'Little Eyes', gets its name from the farm 'Ogiesfontein', owned by Jan Visagie, on which it was established.
When the Kriel Power Station between Ogies and Kriel was completed in 1979 it was considered to be the largest coal-fired power station in the Southern Hemisphere. It was also one of the first stations to be supplied with coal from a fully mechanised coal mine.
This region is home to the largest of the power stations which feed the electric grid system of South Africa.
The small towns of Hoedspruit and Ogies in Mpumalanga benefit from a R3,2-billion biofuel project, funded by the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and the Central Energy Fund (CEF).
