Boyes Drive is known as a “Suburban Pass” which links the area of Lakeside with Kalk Bay. The Pass is one of Cape Town’s little gems, running along the lower slopes of the Muizenberg Mountains, offering magnificent views over False Bay.

Without a doubt Chapman’s Peak is one of Cape Town’s most beautiful drives with 32 sharp bends and many rocky outcrops, but Boyes Drive is definitely considered one of the most scenic. The road can be accessed from either end of Main Road, but travelling toward Kalk Bay has you on the correct side of the road to stop off at viewpoints and leaves you with beautiful places to luncheon before heading back.

Boyes Drive is a 7 km stretch and presents three summits, with the first two being false. The true summit is the third one close to Kalk Bay. there are many allocated stop-offs along the mountain side, where you can park off and view the vast ocean below. When the whales are in town, usually late winter to early spring, there is hardly a better spot to view then from.

Half way along Boyes Drive between Muizenberg and Kalk Bay is the perfect viewing point, where, if you are lucky you will find the local mountain man equipped with binoculars and books of sea life information, will further educate you on the behaviour of the whales. If you miss him there are sign boards with all the information you need to know about the whales.

The road was named after Mr. George Boyes, the resident magistrate of Simons Town from 1904 to 1916, who enthusiastically supported and encouraged the building of a scenic road around the peninsula. Sadly, died during the four year construction phase of the road, which was officially opened in 1929.
