Mount Frere is a minor town known as the town of Kwabhaca to the locals. The town was founded in the 17th century and named after Sir Henry Bartle Edward Frere.
A busy centre on the trunk road, Mount Frere has several stores, government buildings and a beautiful countryside.
South of the town, the road drops down to the vast valley of the Mzimvubu River.
There is only one major road, being Main Street, on the N2.
Mount Frere is very undeveloped in terms of infra-structure and sanitation and most of the roads are gravel roads. Most people do not have water tanks and still make use of river water and most of the villages are still without electricity.
