The word "Strandfontein" literally translates to “beach fountain” in English. Strandfontein is a vibrant culture with the main religions practiced being Christianity and Islam, although in recent years people with other cultures have moved into this suburb as well.
The Strandfontein suburb is divided into 7 sections i.e Old Strandfontein, Admiral Hills, Wavecrest, New Strandfontein Village, Seacrest, Bayview and San Remo.
The Beach
Strandfontein Pavillion earned blue flag (cleanliness and safety) status, and is situated on the False Bay Coast with Muizenberg to the west. The Indian Ocean flows through the False Bay coastline and is said to be a few degrees warmer in temperature than Cape Town’s Atlantic beaches, hence preferred for swimming. The beach is a long stretch of white sand and clear waters, and its predominant feature is the tidal swimming pool. This makes the beach particularly popular with families who have kids. A movie (Free Willy) has even been shot at this beach.
Anglers can often be seen on this beach, aiming to catch tasty West Coast line fish such as White Steenbras and Galjoen. As one moves towards the northern shores of the coastline, the scenery becomes dramatic, as the Hottentots-Holland and Helderberg mountain ranges come into view.
Surfing is also big in Strandfontein. As mentioned before, the water is a bit warmer than the Atlantic beaches. A project in partnership with NSRI is available to the youth of the community using the medium of surfing to engage with water safety and ocean knowledge.
Activities
Strandfontein boasts a massive sports ground which is fully utilized by the community. They have soccer, cricket and other types of sports training during the week and matches over the weekend. There’s also a skateboard ramp for the avid skateboarders.
This is a community who loves the outdoors and exercising. A person can witness people walking or jogging from early morning to early evening from the young to the old. In the local community hall and parks around Strandfontein the residents exercise in groups during the week-days.
Every Sunday as from 01 October to the end of the summer there are markets at Strandfontein Pavilion. A variety of goods are on sales, from food to something trendy to wear. Locals flock to the market as it’s an ideal Sunday outing.

Strandfontein has good public transport such as Golden Arrow busses and taxi’s. Myciti buses can be taken from Town Centre which is 15 min away from Strandfontein.
