Established in 1891, Meyerton was named after Johannes Petrus Meyer, a member of the Transvaal Volksraad. It acquired municipal status in 1961 and since 1994, has been the administrative centre for the Midvaal Local Municipality.
Over the past 14 years many projects have been undertaken to develop the area, some of these projects include the R59-Corridor, a new development of factories and logistics facilities and the development of Sicelo, a new neighbourhood for low-cost housing.
Meyerton is also the location of the SABC shortwave broadcasting facilities in Bloemendal.
