Sardine Winter Splash

“South Coast Celebration”

The Sardine Winter Splash Festival takes place during the month of July, the same time as the well-known KwaZulu-Natal South Coast “Sardine Run”. The “Sardine Run” is an annual phenomenon where large shoals of sardines enter the waters of the southern KwaZulu-Natal during the winter months, causing an extraordinary spectacle!

During the month of July, certain winds and current conditions, can sometimes force the shoals of sardines very close to the beach where they can easily be caught with baskets and hand nets. Often, spectators join in catching the fish with their shirts or skirts! The South Coast is a popular time to visit during this phenomenon and the perfect time for a festival. The Sardine Winter Festival begins in Margate and the festivities and fun travels along the coastline past towns like Southport, Scottburgh, Ramsgate and finally comes to an end in Hibberdene.

The festival offers all kinds of fun activities from beach games such as sack races, tug of war, three legged races and much more. Beauty pageants are held up and down the coast at each stop and both young and old can enter craft or dance competitions, watch beach sports like Volleyball or even participate in the beach yoga sessions

So, if you feel like witnessing the Sardine Run and joining in some beach fun, book your accommodation early and enjoy the South Coast this winter!
