The Margate Art Museum is situated in the heart of this popular seaside town, just over an hours’ drive from Durban. The Museum provides a window into the amazing artistic potential of the Southern African people.

The Margate Art Museum has been given the title, “the largest art museum in Kwa-Zulu Natal” and has been offering since its opening in 1994, an extensive collection local art and crafts. The diversity of the collection has been expanding rapidly and now includes some non-local art pieces as well.

With the majority of the work on display being produced in Kwa-Zulu Natal, a large part of the local art reflects the variety of culture and artistic styles of the region. The Museum even boasts a ‘School Corner” which consists of works created by learners from local schools.

The Margate Art Museum is an integral part of the community education and wonderful outreach and educational programme consisting of talks, workshops, art tours and much more is offered to groups and scholars at the Museum.
