History
The name Magaliesburg comes from the name Mohale Mohale. Mohale was the Chief of the Po Tribe who lived in the area around 1820, during the time of the Voortrekkers.
The Magaliesburg River and 120 km mountain range took their names from the same source.
In former years the Magaliesburg region was home to big game including elephants and lion.
The discovery of the remains of the earliest species of primitive man know today, in and around the Sterkfontein Caves area, has ensured the area has the most interesting and longest history than anywhere in the country.
The area has also seen it fair share of war, in October 1899, war broke out between the British and the Boers. Within a year, blood and human lives were lost between these two warring parties, in the Magaliesburg valleys, at Kommando Nek, Nooitgedacht and in many of the deep gorges and high ridges along the mountain side.
