The Kareedouw Pass is a modern and well-engineered Pass, named after the small town of Kareedouw which lies at the northern end of the pass. The name is of Khoi origin and means "Path of the Karee trees"

The Pass offers a short cut between the N2, just past the Tsitsikamma area and near the tiny seaside village of Skuitbaai, with the small town of Kareedouw. It is easily navigated and not a very long Pass with only 7  bends and all of them minor twists and turns. There are also no major dangers along this road except for the obvious, heavy rain and mist which can occur at times.

The Kareedouw Pass has beautiful views of the Tsitsikamma mountains and the sweeping green valley dotted with dams and forest areas.

Approaching from the South, turn off the N2 about midway between Humansdorp and Storms River, and head north approximately 2.5 km to the southern starting point of the Pass. The ascent is evenly graded at about 1:14 and the summit is at a natural neck between unnamed peaks of 819 m to the west and 744 m to the east, both part of the Kareedouw mountains.

The road descends at an easier gradient before dropping down to intersect with the R62 – the longest wine route in the world - on the outskirts of Kareedouw, a small sleepy country village.
