One of four Passes with the same name, this Langkloof Pass can be found just outside the town of Garies. The first of the others, not too far away in the same province, can be found just outside Olifantshoek and two others can be found in the Western Cape, near Kareedouw and Montagu.

Langkloof Pass, meaning “long ravine or valley”, lies deep in the Namaqualand mountains connecting the farming communities of the area with Garies as well as linking Garies with the small communities of Leliesfontein, Paulshoek and Kheis.

Not many people know of this hidden gem and it is a fabulous drive, particularly during springtime, to see the Namaqualand wild flowers that this part of the world is so famous for. Between August and September, the usual sun-parched landscape transforms into endless carpets of multi-coloured wild-flowers.

The Pass can be driven in both directions.  Starting from the northern point however offers the traveller better views and better light for photos. The easiest way, as there are three ways to find the northern starting point, is to travel out of Garies on Main Road, directly ascending the beautiful Studers Pass first. At the other end of the Langkloof Pass, is the Skuinshoogte Pass which will also need to be travelled when enjoying a day drive of the Langkloof Pass.

The roads are in fairly good condition, however a vehicle with high ground clearance is recommended. The road opens up to many other route options and the descent offers a number of mini-summits and plateaus. There are approximately six gates that need to be opened and closed along the way. These helps slow the pace down and it is advisable to set at least 30 to 40 minutes aside to drive this Pass.  This is not a road to take if you are in a hurry and it goes without saying that in wet weather extra caution should be taken especially at river crossings!
