Soweto Marathon in Nasrec, Johannesburg South, Gauteng
“The People’s Race”
Now in its 23rd year, the Soweto Marathon has proven to be one of the most popular sporting events in the country with a minimum of 25 000 sportsmen and women participating each year.
The venue for the Marathon, Half Marathon and 10 km race is the magnificent FNB Stadium in the vibrant and historical Soweto Township. Soweto is the largest township in Johannesburg with a complex history and on the 6th November it will become a hub of activity as it hosts the marathon fondly known as “The People’s Race” which quite aptly describes our Rainbow Nation.
The Race is considered a tour of this historical area and runners will pass a few of the most popular tourist spots and historical places such as the Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication in Kliptown, Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, the Hector Pieterson Memorial, Winnie-Madikizela Mandela’s house and Jabulani Mall.
Once again this year promises to be a fantastic celebration of running so sign up early as the entries are capped! Spectators welcome, the runners always appreciate the support!
