Hermanus Botanical Society Flower Festival

Celebrate Fernkloof’s 60th Anniversary Year

The Hermanus Flower Festival, hosted annually by the Hermanus Botanical Society, is a four day event held at the Fernkloof Nature Reserve in the Kleinrivier Mountains above Hermanus.

2017 sees the 60th Anniversary of the Fernkloof Nature Reserve and the Festival will be celebrating this very special birthday. A book on the Reserve, compiled by the Hermanus Botanical Society, will be launched and the floral display in the hall will compliment and reflect the beauty and diversity of the Reserve.

Visitors can enjoy environmental exhibits and no less than 400 labelled specimens of fynbos species indigenous to the area. The festival could not take place at a better time as September is just when the endemic fynbos is coming into full bloom in the unspoilt Cape Floral Kingdom.

A festival isn’t a festival unless there are goodies to buy, childrens’ activities and refreshments so families can expect to see their youngsters enjoying train rides and joining in the fun of cresting their own fairy garden, while the adults do a little shopping in the Marquee which will be offering goodies from needlework and art work to books, card, garden pots and stepping stones. In-between these activities, families can meet at the Fynbos Café for a cup of tea and a delicious light lunch!

Francious, back by popular demand, will be providing a demonstration on his slithering fynbos snakes so be sure to show up early and not miss out on the interesting programme of events.

From Cape Town, travelling along the N2

On arriving in Hermanus, travel down the Main Road making a left turn at the bottom robots to continue along the coastline. Pass through the four-way stop at the Marine Hotel and continue until you come to Fir Avenue on the left, just before a traffic circle which leads you to the beaches. Travel up Fir Avenue until you reach the entrance of the Fernkloof Nature Reserve. The Botanical Centre buildings, including the Herbarium and Nursery, are on the left, gardens on the right and the Visitors’ Centre from which hiking trails radiate, is about 500 metres up the road.
