The Harold Johnson Nature Reserve on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast, is a delight for the amateur naturalist with 100 hectares of fascinating fauna and flora. This lovely sanctuary lies 6km from the Thugela river mouth on the south bank of the river.
Wildlife species include blue, red and grey duiker, impala, bushbuck, zebra, slender mongoose, white-tailed mongoose, banded mongoose, porcupine and vervet monkey. For birders the reserve has a list of almost 200 species and there are 114 species of butterflies.
Fort Pearson and the Ultimatum Tree, the site of the British ultimatum to the Zulu nation in 1879 which precipitated the Anglo-Zulu War, are both found in the reserve. They have both been declared a National Monument.
The main activities to enjoy in Harold Johnson would be simply relaxing or hiking, with 7km of nature trails, including the 'Muthi' trail, which gives some interesting insight into the medicinal uses of various traditional plants used by the Zulu people.
There is a camping and caravanning area with ablutions.
