Strandveld Museum in Franskraal, Wes-Kaap

The Strandveld Museum is situated near the Franskraal Beach in Gansbaai. Also close to Dyer Island, a popular spot with tourists and locals come to watch Great White Sharks. The Museum used to be the home of one of the Headman on Dyer Island and exhibits some of the old furniture and household items that belonged to him.

The quaint building dates back to the 1860’s and is owned by Jan and Estie Fourie who run the small Museum. Today, the Strandveld Museum is home to the largest privately owned collection of relics from the HMS Birkenhead which sunk at Danger Point near Gansbaai in 1845 wherein 437 souls were lost. The displays also include historic photos of Gansbaai and surrounding areas, fishing and farming equipment, and interesting Strandveld memorabilla.

The museum, with Jan and Estie, has a fountain of interesting stories. Both of them are avid storytellers and enjoy sharing their stories with visitors. Visitors may book an evening in the museum where they can enjoy a traditional three-course meal, cooked in the museum’s kitchen.

This is a visit not to be missed when you are in the Gansbaai. Your marvellous story tellers will gladly take you on a trip through time.
