Another Cherry-licious Festival!

Ficksburg has been known as the “Cherry Capital of the World” and to celebrate this title the small, but beautiful town hosts an annual Cherry Festival. The first Festival took place in 1968, making this the longest running crop Festival in South Africa. This year, it comes back yet again to bring you all your cherry desires!

The main events back in 1968 were the street parades, the Cherry Ball and the crowning of the Cherry Queen. Over time the events have changed slightly, but the whole feel of the festival still makes visitors fall in love with the delicious cherries!

The Ficksburg Cherry Festival now attracts approximately 20 000 visitors to this quaint town every year and offers magnificent scenery along with a fun filled festival with something for both young and old. A number of events run alongside each other over the three days, you can find a program of all these events on their website; from sporting activities and kids’ activities to farm tours, tastings, workshops, and an exhibition and market stalls that are jam packed with goodies galore. This allows visitors more than enough choice that will keep them coming back every year to see what is in store!

In addition to the usual activities visitors can expect to see a few old favourites’ brought back yet again, such as the popular Scottish Pipe band and cherry pip spitting contest.

Make sure to bring the whole family for a weekend away and enjoy more than just the festival, but a little tranquillity in this very pretty spot of the country!
