Cederberg Wildernisgebied, Wes-Kaap
The Cederberg Wilderness area is located 250 km north of Cape Town and consists of 71 000 ha of rugged mountainous terrain. The Wilderness was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritige site in 1973 and received World Heritage Site status in 2004 as part of the Cape Floral Region. This area when included with the Cederberg Conservancy that is found inside the borders of the Cederberg Wilderness, increases in size to 170 000 hectares. These 22 conservancies are privately owned land (mostly farmers) who have undertaken to keep the areas in their natural state and protect the fauna and flora. Three of these conservancies are the Cederberg Conservancy, Pakhuis Conservancy and the Nardouwsberg Conservancy.
The area was named after the rare tree called "Widdringtonia cedarbergensis" and is well known for its remarkable sandstone formations, ancient rock art and unspoilt terrain. The Cederberg Wilderness area is popular with seasoned hikers as it has 300 km of well looked after hiking and mountain biking trails in pristine, rugged mountains.
