Boosmansbos Wilderness Area, Wes-Kaap
In the Langeberg Mountain range, 267 km from Cape Town and between Swellendam and Heidelberg lies the Boosmansbos Wilderness Area. It is not a very well-known area generally but it falls under the protection of the Cape Floral Region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a rugged forest reserve covering an area of 14 000 hectares and a treasure to be valued with its unspoiled vegetation and streams of clear water running through it.
Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve is incorporated into the Boosmansbos Wilderness Area.
Boosmansbos is a hiker’s paradise with its wild indigenous forests, mountainous land and extensive fynbos vegetation. Strict conservation has maintained this wilderness in pristine and unspoilt condition.
Plants
In 1978 in order to protect the indigenous forest, the area was proclaimed a wilderness area. Some of the trees in question were:
- Beech
- Candlewood
- Stinkwood
- White and Red alder
- Yellowwood
- Rare Shrubs
Rare Erica species were found in this area and needed to be conserved due to it their rarity, such as:
- Erican Blenna
- Erica Langebergenisis
- Erica Barrydalensis
Animals
- Buck
- Mongoose
- Genet
- Leopards – occasionally make an appearance
- Birds - 184 species including eagles.
Activities
- Hiking - trails meander through exquisite vegetation with rare flowers and shrubs and then downhill to the kloofs (steep-sided wooded ravine or valley) and the forest with its green sheltering trees. There are 64 km of paths and the most popular is the 27 km circular route that takes 2 days.
- Refuse - Hikers are advised that all refuse is to be taken out of the reserve as there are no facilities to clean up after them.
- Fires – No fires are allowed in the area at all.
