Gateway to the Northern Drakensberg
Located almost exactly halfway between Johannesburg and Durban is the little town of Bergville. It lies along the R74, a more scenic alternative to the N3 and a safer option if Van Reenen’s Pass if it is closed due to bad weather. This route takes you via the Oliviershoek Pass and the little village of Winterton.
Surrounded by the beautiful Drakensberg Mountains, Bergville is literally the gateway to the Northern Drakensberg, and is a peaceful town, ideal for tourists wishing to escape the city life. Bergville is a perfect base for those visiting the Drakensberg, as it is close to the Royal Natal National Park, Rugged Glen Nature Reserve, Cathkins Peak State Forest and Monks Cowl. The town boasts a huge outdoor arena where everything is up for grabs, from hiking through the foothills and forests, caves and San Rock Art to birding, fishing and even golfing!
Although Bergville is essentially an agricultural town, it still holds local cattle sales every month, the flowing Tugela River and dramatic mountain scenes around the town are definitely a photographers dream come true!
Bergville’s history lies in the Anglo-Boer War and has many features in and around the town to showcase the event. The only surviving British Blockhouse in the Province is situated here, within the grounds of the court house and serves as a monument and a small museum.
Accommodation in and around Bergville includes B&B’s and Guesthouses, hotels and also camping and self-catering cottages.
