When visiting Arniston, or any of the smaller towns along the Cape Agulhas coastline, the Waenhuiskrans Cave is a must see! The Cave is situated just outside the small fishing village and it is important to plan your visit well as the Cave is only accessible during low tide!

Waenhuiskrans Cave is directly responsible for Arnison’s other name – Waenhuiskrans means “wagon house cliff” in Afrikaans and the local theory is that the Cave is so big that a wagon with a full span of oxen can turn around in it! It is not quite clear how you would get your wagon and oxen down there, but that is not important, what is however, is its incredible beauty and the magnificent view of the Ocean from within!

This massive limestone cave is believed to be the biggest coastal cave with no supporting pillar. Getting there can be a bit tricky, so wear comfortable footwear as it is a good 20 minute walk with a few steep steps on the rocky cliff and some beach trailing before you reach the small opening beneath a rocky overhang. This overhang is what visitors describe as the “lobby”, the main cavern is further inside, and you will have to get your feet wet even at low tide.

Inside Waenhuiskrans Cave you will find rocks and pebbles as well as small pools, take a breath and enjoy the incredible views out over the Ocean!

From Arniston travel south on Habour St. to the parking lot by Roman Beach

Continue walking 1.4 km along the 4x4 road to the stone stairs leading down to the small beach

Follow the coast south for approximately 50 metres, walking to the right and there, under an overhang will be a small cave opening with an entrance to the large cave in the back. If you go too far you will come to the sea entrance of the large cave with deep water — go back about 30 metres to the small cave to be able to access the inside of the large cave
